Come on over to Instagram and say Hi!

Thanks to the wonderful @klondikedogderby voluntee Thanks to the wonderful @klondikedogderby volunteers and the city of Excelsior for hosting a new favorite event! Reviving an Excelsior tradition that started in the 1930’s! Saturday was chilly but we wouldn’t have missed the opening race for anything, it was so cool!!
Hi and welcome! I’m Emily 🫐 This image is my Hi and welcome! I’m Emily 🫐

This image is my new absolute favorite, taken by my dear friend @midnighttoast on 35mm film. He is such a talented artist isn’t he!! It reminds me that I need to get in front of the lens too sometimes!

I’m lucky to have this image because this year I turned 40, my boys aren’t little anymore at 8 & 10, and somehow life seems to be snowballing past me faster than ever. I’m seeing more physical signs that I’m no longer in my 30’s - the grey hair, the lag in memory, that weird vertical line in my forehead that keeps getting deeper. But I also know that in five years and ten years I’ll be so happy to look at this picture and see how beautiful I was at 40. I also know that my boys will have this image of me when they are this age too, which might not seem important now but is actually so valuable.

What is a portrait taken over 10 years ago that you absolutely hold dear? Is it your kid’s toothless smile? Is it a loved one who has since passed? Is it a younger you?

Photography is important. I’d venture to say that professional portraiture is even more important today. I know I t feels like you have all these pictures on your phone so you should be good to go right? But is there artistry and intentional creation in these images? Is there real expression? Is there craftsmanship? Is there you in the photo or are you always the one taking the photos 🙋🏻?!
Yesterday I was able to spend some time at the Min Yesterday I was able to spend some time at the Minnesota Arboretum with my brother Andy, a local blown glass artist. Andy is amazing, and watching him take a 10 year side hobby into a full time vocation that supports his family of six is truly inspiring.

Last year he told me he was going to start creating these huge blown glass chandeliers, and my first thought was “ok but how?” He had to engineer not only the individual pieces and then blow each of them, he welded the structure they hang from, designed the LED light system inside them, and used his background as a structural engineer to figure out how to safely hang them (because glass is heavy!).

Yesterday those pieces all came together and they are hanging from the top beams of the Visitor Center at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and another one in the Swedish Institute. I couldn’t be more proud!

I got to do the easy part of taking the photos (and a video in the works) but he almost strangled me when I asked if he could “just lower it a couple feet so I can get a better composition 😈. Older sis gotta keep him in check you know😁.
